ARTISTIC STATEMENT/MISSION
To foster, create, and perform new and dynamic dance-based work which utilizes experimentalism, and embodied histories to produce Mitote* about timeless and current cultural issues.
This Company is lead by Cuauhtemoc Peranda as the Artistic Director, Dancer, & Choreographer.
DANZANTES/DANCERS
Madeline Alefosio is a Samoan-American artist who uses movement as a tool to share stories. She is active within local after school programs to teach youth the power behind dance and is currently attending SFSU to earn her B.A. in Dance. She has danced with various companies; Queer United Nations Tribe (Q.U.N.T.), an all female hip hop collective, Village Dancers with SFSU, Hip Hop performing arts at CCSF, and One Love Oceania which is a Pacific Islander Queer Womyn's Collective utilizing the arts (dance, poetry, music, photography, and more) to address social issues and create a healthy dialogue within our P.I. communities and beyond Oceania.
Garrett Lewis Bomberry was born in Berkeley, CA. He is half Welsh-Austrian and half from the Cayuga Tribe of the Iroquois Nation. He is currently studying dance at Laney Community College and Ballet Arts in Oakland. He is a very new dancer and has a background in martial arts and gymnastics.
Judene Small is a native Jamaican and and from New York, NY. She is currently at Mills completing her MFA in Choreography and Performance. Her writings and research revolve around Dance Hall and its globalization. She is also currently a part of Molissa Findley and Dancers and is a freelance dancer in her own right.
Javier Frèsquez - Hometown: El Paso, Texas. Stanford Class of 2012. Earth Systems-Biosphere Major. Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity-IDA Track Minor. Xavier's experience in dance began at age five, when he was dragged kicking and screaming to his first Baile Folklòrico class. After dancing Mexican and International Folklòrico for 9 years he began studying ballet, Spanish classical dance, and Flamenco. He has performed professionally with Danzas Españolas Spanish Dance Company in El Paso, and is a co-founder of Flamenco Cardenal, and La Familia (Stanford’s queer&Latina/o group).
COLLABORATORS
Active in the Bay Area since 2010, Candy Acid is site-specific, ambient-electronic duo Gretchen Jude (Roland SP404 processing) and Lona Kozik (toy electric violin). Candy Acid aims to make low-tech, portable electronic music that both infiltrates and responds to shared human-natural acoustic environments. Our most recent project explores the transitory public spaces of the Bay Area Rapid Transit system.

MITOTE: Defined:
* As a dance idea/form, Cuauhtemoc re-created its meaning to serve as a container for his work, which could not properly fit under the titles of Modern Dance, Post-Modern Dance, Voguing, Neo-indigenous Dance, etc....
* Today, Cuauhtemoc's Mitote stands as a Dance Practice at the intersection of Aztec, Vogue, Modern, Post-Modern, and somatic dance. Yet, its true meaning/form is very elusive, and a continual area of research...mitote is...?
* The company use Cunningham Technique, Butch Queen Vogue, Traditional Azteca Movements, Contact Improvisation to train the body, but artistic-inquiry and investigation of life so that the dance, the Mitote, which has already been created in future time unfolds.
* Time, Timelessness, rhythm, poly-rhythms, and conflation of TIME is the guiding principle of this company's experimental work. Using the sacred circle, circular/spiral thinking, continuous time, the work unfolds.
The company is based in a traditional and contemporary dance practice, stemming from Danza Azteca, Two-Spirit and LBGTQ, Voguing, Latina/o, and Classic American dance cannons.
*Mitote: Nahuatl (Aztec) meaning "dance, dancing, gathering, event/happening, dreaming the future/present/past--dancing it into existence".

Looking to ancestral memory via movement exploration and research, rigorous exploration of embodied history is at the center of the company’s practice.
